Pope Benedict XVI’s Twitter account goes inactive

Pope Benedict XVI will go down in history as the Pope who ushered in a new era of social media to the Holy See, and there’s been much speculation about what would happen to his Twitter account after he steps down. In order to address the questions, Monsignor Paul Tighe, undersecretary of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, has issued a statement noting that the Pope’s Twitter handle, @pontifex, will be inactive during the period leading up to the next Pope’s election.

It will be up to Pope Benedict XVI’s successor to decide if he will use the @pontifex Twitter handle, but it will be available for his use if he wishes to continue the newly established tradition of Tweeting to the faithful.
